About Serenity Power

Serenity Power is developing compact solid oxide fuel cell systems for on-site power. Our work brings together cell materials, stack design, fuel handling and controls, with prototype development and planned field testing in Alberta.

We are a small, hands-on team. Every team member completes safety orientation and role-specific training before working in the lab or shop.

The Role

We are looking for a Mechanical R&D Engineering co-op student who wants to see their CAD models become real hardware. You will design, fabricate, source and package the mechanical systems around our SOFC stacks, from frames, enclosures and weldments to test fixtures and gas routing, and help assemble and test them.

You will be paired with a Serenity engineer who acts as your mentor and day-to-day supervisor, and you will work as a full member of the engineering team alongside our controls, materials and systems engineers. An 8- to 16-month term gives you time to own a defined piece of hardware and see it from design through build and test.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Design

  • Design parametric 3D models, frames, actuators and large assemblies in SolidWorks or Fusion 360, with a focus on design for manufacturing and assembly, cost and performance
  • Design supports, enclosures and weldments for high-temperature environments, including joint preparation and material selection

Drawings, Specifications & Procurement

  • Produce detailed production drawings with GD&T (ASME Y14.5), bills of materials and technical specifications for in-house fabrication and external suppliers
  • Select materials and manufacturing methods across CNC machining, 3D printing, sheet metal, welding and injection molding, and work with vendors on quotes and parts

Prototyping & Fabrication

  • Operate, troubleshoot and optimize 3D printers for rapid prototypes, functional parts, jigs and test fixtures
  • Assemble physical prototypes and support hands-on shop fabrication

Electro-Mechanical Integration

  • Work with controls and instrumentation engineers to integrate sensors, actuators, wire harnesses, cable management and gas routing from electrical schematics and P&IDs
  • Design for thermal management and serviceability in system packaging

Testing, Safety & Risk

  • Conduct risk assessments to applicable safety standards, and run durability, performance and hardware integrity tests
  • Complete Serenity's safety orientation and role-specific training, and follow SOPs, hazard assessments and PPE requirements
  • Keep design files, drawings and test records organized and current

Collaboration & Communication

  • Collaborate across electrical, software, materials and safety teams through every project phase
  • Communicate progress, results and problems clearly, and handle confidential information responsibly so Serenity's IP is protected
  • Present your work to the technical team periodically at the end of your term

Qualifications

Required

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Manufacturing or Materials Engineering or a related program, and eligible for a co-op work term through your institution
  • Experience with 3D CAD (SolidWorks or Fusion 360) through coursework, design teams, projects or work
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings, and with at least some manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, 3D printing, sheet metal or welding
  • Comfortable with hands-on shop and lab work, and keen to learn new tools and techniques
  • Available for an 8-, 12- or 16-month term

Nice to Have

  • Previous co-op or student design team experience (robotics, Formula, solar car, aerospace and similar)
  • GD&T (ASME Y14.5), BOMs and large assembly design
  • Weldment and sheet metal design, or hands-on welding and fabrication
  • Basic electrical integration: wiring, enclosures, harness routing
  • Risk assessments, safety standards or durability testing
  • Interest in clean energy and decarbonizing off-grid and industrial power

What We Offer

  • Competitive co-op compensation
  • One-to-one mentorship from a Serenity engineer
  • Hands-on experience designing and building first-of-a-kind fuel cell systems, from CAD to tested hardware
  • A small, mission-driven team where your work is seen and used
  • A chance to make a measurable impact on clean, reliable power

Great candidates don't always check every box. If you are excited about this role and Serenity's mission, we would love to hear from you.
